Background / Project Overview
As a pet owner with multiple furry companions, I often find myself overwhelmed by the constant stream of emails, phone calls, and scattered documents related to my pets’ health. The lack of organization for important medical records and appointment details made managing their care feel like a challenge. With this project, I sought to address that frustration by designing a comprehensive, user-friendly dashboard for veterinary clinic clients.

The goal was to create a centralized platform where pet owners could effortlessly access and organize all their essential information. This dashboard would offer a seamless experience, allowing users to track everything from past appointments and treatments to upcoming visits and vaccinations. With an intuitive layout and easy navigation, it would serve as a one-stop hub for managing their pets’ health, ensuring that important details are always at their fingertips. By streamlining these processes, I aimed to alleviate the stress of keeping track of veterinary care, making it simpler and more efficient for pet owners to stay on top of their pets' well-being.
Problem
Tracking and logging pet health is crucial, but it can quickly become overwhelming when important documents and information are scattered across different places.
Solution
Create a centralized platform where pet owners could effortlessly access and organize all their essential information
Research
In order to understand the needs and challenges of pet owners, I conducted a survey designed to gather insights about the management of pet health and related documentation. The following questions were part of the survey, though not limited to them.
  • How do you currently manage your pets’ health records and appointments? (Select all that apply)
  • Do you feel that managing your pets' health information is: very organized, somewhat organized, disorganized, or chaotic?
  • How often do you find yourself searching for health records, appointments, or other important pet-related documents?
  • Would you use a platform to keep track of your pets' health records and appointments?
  • How important is it for you to have an easy-to-navigate, visually appealing dashboard that centralizes all of your pet’s health information?
Findings
62.5% of participants expressed interest in using a central platform for managing pet care, while 25% indicated they might consider using it. Additionally, over half of the respondents reported that their current method of organizing pet health-related information is either disorganized or chaotic, with records scattered across emails, phone calls, and paper documents.
Persona
Persona, Emma
Name: Emma
Age: 29
Occupation: Marketing Specialist
Location: Suburban area, near a large city
Pet:
Toby, a 3-year-old golden retriever
Key Challenges
Vet Appointment Stress: Emma has trouble keeping up with vet appointments because her schedule is already tight. She sometimes forgets when the next check-up is, and she feels guilty if Toby doesn’t get the attention he needs. She also dreads trying to keep track of all the treatment plans and understanding what’s required at each visit.
Paperwork Anxiety: Emma is drowning in piles of vet bills, test results, vaccination records, and insurance forms. The documents are often scattered, and she finds it difficult to keep track of everything in one place. She stresses about whether she’s missing something that could affect Toby’s health.
Emotional Drivers
Overwhelm: Managing the constant paperwork and reminders feels like a full-time job, and she is exhausted by the responsibility of managing it all.
Goals
Organization: Emma’s ideal solution would allow her to consolidate all health documents, reminders, and medical history in one easy-to-use location.
Journey map
1st Iteration Prototype
Based on the research findings, it was essential to design a prototype of the dashboard that was both minimal and focused. With the identified persona being a stressed pet owner, creating a clean, clutter-free interface became a priority—one that highlighted only the most critical information. The aim was to prevent overwhelming the user and instead offer a streamlined experience, providing easy access to key pet health details.
After finalizing the design, I gathered feedback from two users to assess whether the goals were achieved. Both users agreed that the dashboard successfully met their needs as pet owners, offering a clear and concise overview of their pet’s health. However, a notable suggestion from both was the inclusion of additional features, such as a wellness plan that would guide them through the next steps in their pet’s care. One user even emphasized that this might be more important than listing medications.

Final Prototype
Taking the shared feedback into account, I updated the design to introduce a new widget called the "Wellness Plan." This feature offered reminders for upcoming annual exams, vaccinations, and other important health appointments, ensuring users wouldn’t miss crucial scheduling. While there were other "nice-to-have" suggestions, such as the ability to chat with a veterinarian, it’s important to highlight that the core goal of the case study—creating a simple, central hub for essential pet health information—was successfully achieved.
If I were to continue with this project, the next logical step would be to conduct a competitive analysis of similar platforms to assess their features. This would allow me to identify additional capabilities that users might expect or find valuable. Combined with further user research, this analysis could help determine whether integrating these features would truly enhance the platform’s usefulness and align with the needs of stressed pet owners.
